Death to Valentine's Day - Again!
I don't know if I'm imagining things, but it seems to me that Valentine's Day is BIGGER than it used to be. It feels like they're purposely hyping the unholy crap out of it nowadays: VD has gotten to be like a miniature "holiday season" unto itself in recent years - although certainly not on the scale of Christmas or Thanksgiving. Yet back in the day, if memory serves, it was minor. Insignificant. And mainly for youngsters.
Anyhow, one year ago on this date I made it acidly clear what I think about Valentine's Day. And in those intervening 365 days, my timeless sentiments upon the topic have metamorphosed by nary a crumb in the direction of amelioration.
So travel back in time now, if you will, to 14 February, 2007:

I am female and I can't stand Valentine's day. It's like, buy a girl something day. I tell people not to bother getting me anything because I want nothing to do with it. I work in a place where Valentine's day is the busiest of the year and the flowers are stupidly expensive. IT's the holiday that stresses me out. And it's completely pointless. COunt me in with you, Valentine's Day needs to die. It's all about flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and cards. Of course, I am very UNmaterialistic. If I have food, a place to sleep, clothes to wear, I am pretty content. I get angry answers from my female friends when I say V-day is a stupid holiday, it's not even a holiday IMO. I also hear it called "single women's awareness day" or something and thought, " oh, single, so-called strong, independent and liberated women are rewarding themselves." I am single and even if I wasn't, I would make it clear to my boyfriend that I want zilch for the day. Sexist holiday? I think so. If you love someone truly, one day isn't needed, you love them always. Suprise them for their birthday, anniversary, randomly, NOT for one pathetic day of the year.
YOung Lady
YL, your sentiments are richly appreciated - especially the part about "unmaterialism"
Hopefully, Feb 14, 2008 (yesterday) was everything that you personally could ask for in a day! :)
V-Day was pretty big at Northern Illinois University. The Women's Center had their conference, and practice for the Vagina Monologues was to be the following Saturday. But there is a limit to how many times you can kick the dog before you get bit.
Blessings
Bob
